One green roof topic you can’t avoid is Sedum. It’s the magical green rooftop plant. It needs lots of exposure, little water, dry soil, and it doesn’t grow tall. That said, it comes in an astounding variety of species.
At ecobuild the Green rooftop spoke to at least 5 different companies, each boasting the best sedum in terms of weight, longevity, biodiversity…you get the picture. There’s a wide variety out there, and it’s difficult to distinguish between different products.
Not all of the companies list all the varieties of sedum in their roofs, with some just quoting a rough number of species.
Many of the varieties of Sedum used on green roofs advertised by companies in the UK are in the series of photographs below. The sources of this list are http://www.bauder.co.uk/, http://www.sedumsupply.co.uk/, and http://www.sedumgreenroof.co.uk/.
Some of these might be images of the wrong subspecies – forgive us for that, the specific subspecies often isn’t listed on either the company website or photographs. If any of these are wrong, please do let us know! A fantastic alternative source for images of sedum is http://www.sedumphotos.net/. Wayne Fagerlund, owner of the site, has made it a mission to create a comprehensive photo archive of sedum varieties on the internet, although you definitely have to know what variety you’re looking for.
